The geopolitical developments in the West Philippine Sea have affected the biodiversity and marine environment in the area. To demonstrate, the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine Coast Guard reported extensive damage to the coral reef in the Rozul Reef and Escoda Shoal after a swarming incident. The increased presence of foreign vessels within Philippine territory is described as “alarming,” and their illegal and destructive activities are serious violations of international law.
The 2016 Arbitral Victory of the Philippines, acknowledged by the international community, solidifies the country’s strong position within its territory. Reaffirming the rule of law, the Philippines seeks to further cement its position in the West Philippine Sea through a Maritime Zones Law to secure its rights and jurisdiction over its territory, consistent with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
To gather support and raise awareness on maritime issues, the Philippines observes the Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month every September. This initiative seeks to highlight the various initiatives of government agencies in managing risks and harnessing opportunities in the maritime sector. Beyond the national level, the security risks in the West Philippine Sea are also an area for collaboration with close partners like Australia.
The Philippines elevated its bilateral relationship with Australia to a Strategic Partnership, reflecting the growing relationship between the two countries. In addition, trade relations are boosted under the newly launched “Invested: Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy 2040.” This is a natural progression of flourishing relations and promises a bright future, leveraging both countries’ diplomatic, defense, and economic cooperation.
Considering these factors, the Stratbase ADR Institute, in partnership with the Embassy of Australia in the Philippines, will organize a hybrid townhall discussion entitled, “Implementing a Comprehensive Philippine Maritime Framework to Advance the Rule of Law” on September 27, 2023, Wednesday, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM (PHT) .
This event gathered key experts on maritime security to discuss policy initiatives and studies to forward the discussions on developing and implementing a comprehensive national maritime policy.
