ADRi Event: “Achieving Food Security: Advancing Investments for Agricultural Sustainability”

The Philippines faces multiple challenges exacerbated by climate change, which is widely recognized as dangerous, according to nearly 70% of Filipinos in a survey conducted by Pulse Asia Research Inc. in September 2023. In another survey conducted by Social Weather Stations in December 2023, 87% of Filipinos claim that they have experienced the impact of climate change. These high results consistently highlight the public’s awareness of climate change and its impact. With the Philippines ranking first in the World Risk Report 2023 for high disaster risk, the urgency of addressing climate-related issues is paramount.

One of the critical consequences of climate change is its impact on food security. Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and disrupted supply chains contribute to food shortages and inflation. In a survey commissioned by the Stratbase Institute for Pulse Asia Research Inc. in September 2023, it was revealed that 95% of Filipinos claimed that they have seen and felt the price increase with food, with rice prices particularly affected. Additionally, inadequate logistics infrastructure leads to significant wastage in agricultural produce, thus aggravating the supply shortage. In January 2024, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. stated that 30% of the country’s agricultural produce is wasted because of a poor logistics system.

The effects of these challenges are felt across society, as they continue to face the cost-of-living crisis. A survey conducted by Social Weather Stations in December 2023 showed that around 72% of Filipinos consider themselves to be hungry, with 35% of them saying that they are experiencing food poverty. Government data reflects the severity of the situation as well – with the country’s inflation rate rising to 3.7% in March 2024, driven by higher food prices and transportation costs for the month. This reflects an urgency to address the inefficiencies and aggravating factors across the spectrum of the food supply chain that are contributing to the rising cost of food products for the Philippine population.

Addressing these interconnected challenges requires a multifaceted approach. Investments in logistics and distribution networks are crucial to improving supply chain efficiency and reducing food wastage. Additionally, policies aimed at mitigating climate change and building resilience are essential for ensuring long-term food security.

In light of this, the PHINMA, Stratbase ADR Institute and Makati Business Club entitled, “Achieving Food Security: Advancing Investments for Agricultural Sustainability.” This hybrid event was held on 24 June 2024 (Monday) from 9:00 AM to 12:00 NN (PHT) at The Fifth at Rockwell, Makati City and available via Zoom.

The event aimed to encourage insightful and collaborative discussions to cultivate a resilient and sustainable food security environment within the country. Prioritizing investments and implementing target measures can overcome food insecurity challenges, improve the standard of living for citizens, and pave the way for a resilient and prosperous future.
