With recent developments that seemingly undermine the established rules-based international system, serious questions over the adherence to the international law have been raised. For instance, over recent months we have seen chemical weapon attacks in Syria, Salisbury and Kuala Lumpur. In Europe, we have also seen parts of countries forcibly taken by others. In Asia-Pacific we are seeing huge challenges emerge in relation to the South China Sea/West Philippine Sea, with the Permanent Court of Arbitration Award being set aside by key players. The world is experiencing many other such challenges, such as increased external interference in domestic processes and increased number of cyber-attacks. While many of these incidents have occurred in isolation, they need to be viewed collectively, as they represent a significant challenge to the rules-based international order. This forum seeks to address the following questions: how can challenges like the above be addressed effectively with the integrity of the rules-based international system upheld? Is there a developing trend towards selective implementation of the rules-based international system by some, and, if so, why and what can be done about it? In this regard, the Stratbase ADRi will be hosting a half-day conference entitled “Challenges to a Rules-Based International System: Moving Forward” on August 17, 2018. Senior British Government Minister for Asia and the Pacific, Mr. Mark Field MP, will be making the keynote speech.

Stratbase ADR Institute will be hosting a roundtable discussion entitled “The 21st Century Silk Road: Perils and Opportunities of China’s Belt and Road Initiative” on June 20, 2018 in Makati City. The roundtable discussion will start with the presentation of Richard Heydarian’s Special Study with the same title. The Special Study provides an analyses how China’s Belt and Road Initiative will promote and support internal economic rebalancing and China’s expansion of strategic presence across resource-rich and geographically important nations. Heydarian’s study also examines the possible challenges of BRI-related investments in the Philippines. Richard Heydarian is an academic, columnist and author focusing on the Asia-Pacific and MENA regions. He is currently a resident political analyst at GMA Network and a non-resident fellow at ADRi.

The Stratbase ADR Institute, along with the Australian Embassy and Australian Trade and Investment Commission, is holding the Australian Innovation Summit in the Philippines today at the Makati Diamond Residences. This full-day program focuses on showcasing Australian innovation in areas that are key priorities for the Philippines and its future growth.

Stratbase ADR Institute, Inc. (ADRi) will be hosting a roundtable discussion entitled “The Revival of the QUAD and the Emergence of the Indo-Pacific as the 21st Century Geopolitical Region” today in Makati City. The roundtable discussion will start with the presentation of Dr. Renato De Castro of his special study with the same title. In his Special Study, Dr. De Castro examined the relation between the revival of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD) in the second decade of the 21st century and the formation of the Indo-Pacific as a geopolitical region. As a loose security association composed of Australia, Japan, the United States and India, the QUAD emphasizes the importance of rules-based order. Its revival, in turn, gave rise to a new geopolitical region—the Indo-Pacific. In conclusion, the article analyzes how the revival of the QUAD and the emergence of the Indo-Pacific as a geopolitical region will affect the Philippines as it adopts a policy of appeasement on China. Thereafter, feedback to Dr. De Castro’s Special Study will be given by experts.
