Stratbase ADR Institute, Inc. (ADRi) hosted a roundtable discussion entitled: “Mining through the National Security Lens” on March 20, 2018 in Makati City. The roundtable discussion started with the presentation of Dr. Ronald U Mendoza of his special study with the same title. The study examines the Philippine mining industry in the context of promoting national security through industrialization. It likewise reviews industrialization in other countries. In this connection, the China-Philippine relations vis-à-vis its steel trade and the Philippines’ possible risk of growing dependence on Chinese steel will be examined. Lastly, it provides evidence to support the economic viability of developing downstream mineral processing industries in the Philippines. Thereafter, feedback to Dr. Mendoza’s Special Study were given by experts.
