The freedom to elect the governing leaders is the foundation of any working democracy. It is through the voice of the people that the peaceful transition of power to a new set of leaders is determined in accordance with the law of the land which prescribes a renewed mandate with each political cycle. Such came to pass this May in presidential election that many see as historic in many dimensions. It was the first nationwide election to take place in the midst of a pandemic and economic crisis, and the highest numerical majority of 31 million voters electing a President and Vice President with a majority vote of over 58%. Many first-time senatorial candidates had also won seats, and overall voter turnout at the precincts was high. This election was also the sixth national election to be conducted with an automated election system.
As the new administration begins its six-year term, the Stratbase ADR Institute, together with Democracy Watch Philippines, organized a virtual town hall to reveal the results of a commissioned study on the Filipino voter’s perception of the conduct and legitimacy of the 2022 national elections. Election experts and democracy advocates from the academe, civil society, and government, engaged in a deep dive discussion to give their insightful analyses of the survey data and important learnings that can further improve the administration and voter experience of the automated election system.
It is our hope at the Institute that this will be an avenue for objective and constructive review of the past polls that will extract meaningful inputs to further strengthen our democratic institutions as we continue to move our country forward in these difficult times.
