The Stratbase Institute hosted a fireside chat with United States Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby during his official visit to the Philippines as part of the United States’ efforts to reaffirm the country’s commitment to build durable peace in the Indo-Pacific region.  

In his welcome remarks, Stratbase Institute President and CEO Prof. Victor Andres “Dindo” Manhit highlighted that the United States consistently ranks first among the countries Filipinos want the Philippine government to work with in defending the West Philippine Sea and advancing economic security. He emphasized that the Philippines–United States alliance carries greater weight today than at any point in recent memory, and that engagements such as Under Secretary Colby’s visit provide an important opportunity to translate this trust into a stronger, more capable, and more resilient alliance that responds to present challenges and contributes to a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific.  

In his remarks, Under Secretary Colby described the Philippines as a “model ally,” recognizing it as a resolute and proud nation determined to strengthen its own capabilities to better defend itself and its interests. He stressed that as the Philippines steps up, takes greater responsibility for its own defense, and invests in the modernization of its military and coast guard, the United States is backing these efforts with concrete and visible support.  

The Stratbase Institute looks forward to continued engagement with Under Secretary Colby and other United States officials in advancing a stronger and more resilient Philippines–United States alliance. This fireside chat marks Stratbase’s third engagement with Under Secretary Colby—following the 2022 launch of his book, The Strategy of Denial, and a 2023 roundtable discussion on regional security and Philippine foreign policy.
